Paris is awash in flames after the final game of the World Cup. A race war rages in the streets of the French capitol.
A food shortage strangles the city as citizens trade their dignity and basic rights to survive.
When nationalists storm the Saudi Arabian embassy, the French President declares state of emergency and martial law is imminent.
Amidst the chaos, François, a simple Parisian bartender, must make a stand to protect his family, walking the fine line between warring factions and the tightening noose of government surveillance…
For the Parisians, it is hell on Earth. For the rest of the world, it’s entertainment.
Paris Burns is a deeply moving, gritty, dystopian novel that has shocked and terrified me; it is a novel that is gripping and moving and a novel that will stay with me for a long time. As a reader, I adore reading dark novels that make you feel a host of emotions and so that is why I was so captivated by Paris Burns as it is frightening and disturbing but brilliantly wonderful at the same time.
Paris Burns takes place in Paris, 2115 after the final game of the World Cup. Paris is in ruins as a race war rages in the streets of the French capital. The race war that takes place in this brilliant novel causes disastrous events to happen and has deadly effects for those that live in the French capital. Food shortages threaten the lives of the innocent and so does the violence that is ensuing, which is disturbingly violent by the way. Nationalists are trying desperately to take over and when they storm the Saudi Arabian embassy just that happens and soon the French President declares a state of emergency and Martial Law is commenced.
This novel is a tragically harrowing read which explores many themes such as racism, extremists and survival. This book is harrowing because at the heart of the chaos are families who are struggling to survive with no help and this is very telling of events that happen in war stricken countries today and that is one of the many reasons why this novel is poignant. This book really did make me feel a host of different emotions, I was terrified by the violence because of how disturbing it was and because the violence that occurs in this book actually happens in real life; that is why it makes it even more disturbing to read. As well as this I was terrified for the core family at the heart of this story. Francois who could be described at the head of the family, is a wonderful character and he must do anything to protect his family…at any cost and it makes for a chilling read.
As well as this book being shocking it is also poignant because this novel is very telling of the world today and the events we see frequently in the news. The author is not shy to discuss race and the extremists who want a race war and that was really eye opening to read because I do not believe I have heard of any books that have been written about this subject. It makes for a chilling read that will definitely stay in my memory for a long time and if you read this novel too it will no doubt do the same.
The novel’s author Kaz Calva is an exceptional writer and his work is beyond magnificent. He has managed to write a haunting, dystopian novel that will terrify and enthral its reader all at the same time; Paris Burns is the kind of novel that plays out like a scary, horror movie… you want to watch the movie but you know something bad is going to happen so you cover your eyes and peek through occasionally, this is how I would describe this memorable, incredible piece of literature. Calva’s descriptions of Paris during the chaos were beautiful and incredibly well written, it was apparent to me from very early on that Calva is a visually descriptive writer and because of this the events that he wrote about played perfectly in my mind and it was incredible but also frightening to imagine. Calva’s writing from beginning to end is full of plot twists and turns that will keep you entertained until the very end so thank you, Kaz, for writing such an exceptional, gripping story! What I adored most about Calva’s novel was that at the heart of the chaos the reader witnesses a family struggling for survival, this, in my opinion, was wonderful and crucial as it injected some much-needed humanity and love into a story that is oppressively dark so once again this just proves that Kaz Calva is a talented writer and definitely one to watch out for.
To conclude my thoughts on Paris Burns I would say if you adore dystopian novels that pack a punch but are also full of heart then you will adore this book and I implore all of you lovely readers to read it! This gripping story gets Five Stars from me!
