Hippies, Gary Gautier

By 1970, the hippie scene was faltering, a victim of both inner contradictions and external forces. The Vietnam war resistance, psychedelic drugs, sexual openness, the freedom of the commune – it seemed that everything about the 1960s could be incredibly liberating or wildly destructive. Against this backdrop, Jazmine, Ziggy, Ragman and a coterie of hippies discover an LSD-spinoff drug that triggers past life regressions and sweeps them toward a dramatic climax. This is the epic tale of hippiedom we’ve been waiting for, intimate in the lives of its characters but panoramic in its coverage of the sights, sounds, and ideals of the Age of Aquarius.

Hippies is a unique and charming novel that took me on a magical journey through the 1960’s … an era I would have loved to experience! This is something I adored about this book, how it took me on a journey through a different era and how it has done so beautifully; I was completely immersed in this novel from beginning to end.

Hippies follow many characters but the focus of this story is on Jazmine. Jazmine is a young woman who has run away from her abusive family whom she has been neglected by for many years. Jazmine has made huge strides in her life and she is now moving past her family and that point of her life and is making a new life for herself. As we learn more about Jazmine and we follow her on her journey we soon learn that she starts to live with a handful of hippies and she enjoys this newfound freedom, she is finally happy and at peace, however not all novels are this straightforward and this novel is not all about hippies, love, and peace. Rather this she soon experiences harsh realities which will be hard for her to overcome and this is the last thing she needs because of her terrible, horrendous past. What she learns is shocking, I will not say what is so shocking but let’s just say that she soon discovers some life-changing realizations.

The story of Hippies is an entertaining and fascinating one that will take you on a journey and let you know all about the hippie lifestyle. For example, it takes the reader to New Orleans to a hippie community who have values such as no prejudices, no race discriminations, and no consumerism, basically values associated with all hippies! They dream of a simple, peace free life which they hope to be full of music, love and many many drugs!

The author Gary Gautier takes the reader on a magical journey and sometimes a scary one. A scary one in the form of how dangerous drug addictions can be, particularly an addiction to the hallucinate LSD and how some elements of the hippie lifestyle can be disturbing and damaging.”   This, as well as Gautier’s writing in general, is descriptive and vivid, it is so vivid at points that the descriptions of the hallucinations make the reader feel as if they are experiencing them their selves; this is how beautiful the authors descriptive writing is!

As soon as I started reading this novel I immediately thought that it reminded me of On the Road by Jack Kerouac. I have read this novel more times than I can count, it is one of mine and my husband’s favorite novels and one of my first gifts to my husband were a special edition of this book. My point is that I adore this novel so if I am comparing it to Hippies then it must be good! This novel reminded me of On the Road for its beautiful, enriching literature but also because of the journey it takes the reader on so if you adore On the Road then you will love this novel too!

To summarise my thoughts on this charming, exquisite novel I would say if you love the novel On the Road or novels that take the reader on a journey then you will adore this. This wonderful novel gets Four Stars from me!
