The First Kingdom, D.N. Meinster

Three hundred years of peace was unprecedented for the Kingdom of Kytheras, yet each citizen went about like it would never end. The young blacksmith, Aros Asilias, planned a life with his girlfriend. The young prince, Doren Tunsev, plotted abdication. And the young mage, Rikki Nasem, dreamed of her freedom. All the while, the immortal King Neanthal remained locked in his prison. No one believed his followers would return, or that they would be capable of releasing him. But when they reappear and swear to do just that, it falls to Aros, Doren, and Rikki to stop them.

The First Kingdom is an enchanting story that is full of all things wonderful and mystical. It is a novel that has charmed me and swooped me away to a different land and I would be lying if I said I was not sweeped away to this land very quickly within the first few pages. Here is a little bit more about this enchanting tale!

The First Kingdom is set in a fantasy realm known as the Kingdom of Kytheras. Kytheras has experienced peace for over three hundred years and so it’s residents are happy. However I am sure you can assume that this peace will not last forever and when this peace does dissipate it comes as a shock to the residents of Kytheras as they intended to have peace forever. Our story focuses on four main characters and they are a young blacksmith named Aros Asilias. Aros has planned a life with his girlfriend and he is desperate for this dream life to happen. We then have a young Prince named Doren Tunsey however he has failed to fulfil his responsibility and so he is renouncing the throne… in other words abdication. We then have an incredible young mage named Rikki Nasem and she dreams of freedom. This is where our fourth main character comes in and his name is Neanthal and he is an immortal King vanquished to be locked in prison forever and let me just say now he is very evil! Nobody ever thought that this evil King could rise again and nobody believed that his followers would return but when both of these things happen it will be up to Aros, Doren and Rikki to stop them once and for all.

This novel is truly brilliant. This may be a YA novel but please do not let this deter you as I am a 20-something year old wife and mother of four children and I adored it! It is a book that is accessible to all readers and its story is fascinating. The First Kingdom is a novel that compelled me until the very end, its story flows so beautifully and never once does the reader get bored. It is a charming novel with an incredible fantasy world and it will make you fall in love with this realm.

Our author D.N. Meinster has done a fantastic job at writing an incredible fantasy novel. His world building alone is superb and dense; he has created a world that his readers can get lost in wonderfully. I loved his vivid descriptions and his wonderful characters. Speaking of his characters they truly were fascinating and they were all intriguing and lovable in their own right… despite Neanthal the evil King of course!

To summarise my thoughts on this wonderful novel I would say if you are looking for a light fantasy read which will intrigue and entertain you with its incredible moments then you will adore this novel! This perfect novel gets Four Stars from me.
