It is 1988, and Chicago is a center of electro-industrial music. For best friends Jonathan and Scott, the city holds everything they need to finally succeed with a band: plenty of venues and a music-hungry audience. When a friend offers them an entire floor of an abandoned factory to live and rehearse in, the musicians see a way to break free from years of failure. To secure the opportunity, they must move immediately, leaving everything and everyone behind in Ohio, including Jonathan’s lover Amy–the woman who saved him from self-destruction.
With few belongings and little money, they arrive in Chicago. While creating their newest band, Jonathan attempts to come to terms with abandoning Amy while Scott battles haunting memories of a friend killed years earlier. As they struggle to keep it together, a new woman enters Jonathan’s life and their band reaches new heights in the music scene. But nothing is as it appears, everyone is harboring secrets, and self-deceit is a treacherous illusion that hangs over them like a dark shadow.
A Perfect Blindness is a psychologically thrilling read that captivated me from the very first page. It’s story is full of intrigue as well as darkness and the fact that this novel continuously surprised me meant that I raced through this novel extremely fast and ended up loving it!
At this point in my review I would talk about the synopsis but the synopsis above does a pretty great job of explaining this; I promise I am not being lazy! Normally if I feel I can add a little more to the description of the book than I will but the above description describes this novel perfectly, besides! I don’t want to delve into the details of this novel too much because it is a book full of incredible shocks and surprises and I wouldn’t want to ruin it for all of you lovely book readers!
A Perfect Blindness has become one of my favourite reads of 2017 so far. There is something special about this novel…something unique with an eerie darkness and fascination that surrounds it. It is the kind of novel where you think “I shouldn’t like this but I do!” It truly is that kind of novel and I loved how the author pushed the boundaries of the literary world. Its story is simply brilliant and I have to praise our author for his exceptional world building. Especially his version of Chicago! I adore Chicago so reading all about one of my favourite cities was heaven to me and he wrote about that wonderful place so eloquently and this world building of his made this incredible novel even better.
One thing I really loved about this novel was the fact that it followed four – three of them main characters – on a journey and it was an exploration of human nature and that was really beautiful to me to read and experience. I loved being on this journey of music and heartache, and tough decision making as well as so much more; it centres you as a reader and makes you reflect on the own decisions you have made in your life. I was so invested in this novel and I was perfectly drawn in by Hunt’s descriptive literature; it was simply glorious.
The story itself is a shocking one and the author takes the reader on many unexpected turns. So much so that when I was reading this I had to re-read some parts and take it all in! It was magnificent and I love when an author does this to a reader, this is how reading should be! Full of shocks and surprises and great thrilling moments that you will remember for a long time; if not forever!
Briefly above I talked about the authors exceptional world building. Our author Hunt has not only built an exceptional world and a perfect portrayal of the 1980’s but he has also built incredible character profiles that are all unique and fascinating in their weird but wonderful ways. It is important to me to be able to read a novel that has an incredible setting as well as intriguing characters but it is also important to have an amazing stream-lined story and has Hunt done this? He has! His writing blew me away and captivated me. Hunt is a descriptive writer and I noticed that from the very beginning; His ability to capture the readers attention is immediate and this combined with his incredible story, world building, his fantastic characters and story made it an extremely exciting read!
To conclude my thoughts on A Perfect Blindness I would say if you are looking for an incredible, thought-provoking, dark book that is full of twists and turns galore then you will adore this novel! This enchanting novel gets Four Stars from me!
