Viking Resurrection, Steve Dunn

England, 999AD. Twelve-year old Amy’s parents have gone missing, the summer has leapt into winter, and graves are bursting their occupants forth. As she gathers family and new friends to rescue her Ma and Pa, hell is uncovered from across the seas: an undead army and beasts from the darkest corners of their nightmares.

In a fast-paced adventure that spans an era and a continent, Amy must ensure that when facing the order of Hel only faith and family can withstand its wicked schemes.

Viking Resurrection is an exciting, thrilling journey that enthralled me from beginning to end, it is a novel that took me on a whirlwind journey and a book that I could not put down… seriously, I devoured this book in just a few days! I was destined to love this novel because of my love of history and mythology and this novel has both of those wonderful subjects and so much more. The historical context wrote by the novel’s well-accomplished author is fascinating and I found myself learning things I had previously not known and besides, the inclusion of Norse mythology made it an even more incredible, thrilling novel that was irresistible to put down! Here is a little bit more about this gripping, unpredictable novel.

Viking Resurrection is a novel with a unique premise which focuses on the Vikings, sorcery, mythology and Saxon history. It is the perfect combination which makes this novel one of the best historical fiction books I have read in a long time! The prologue in the novel starts with an epic, action filled battle which will make your heart beat that little bit faster, this scene thrilled me and because the book opened with it it meant that I was immersed in this novel very quickly and thrust into the harsh time of 999 AD and I adored how our author decided to do this. However, this novel has so much more than incredible battles – it is also about curses and one curse in particular; A curse that follows the novels protagonist Amy and her ancestral blood line. Viking Resurrection is a multi-layered novel and although so much has already happened within this novel soon more does and this is because the Viking dead are rising and they want to unleash hell and bring about Ragnarok. If you love Norse mythology then you will know what Ragnarok means but if you do not know much about Norse mythology then this is a Norse term for Armageddon; the end of days. As the novel progresses the Vikings show no mercy and they leave nothing but destruction and death in their path and this is where our enchanting journey begins.

The plot of Viking Resurrection is rich and dense and the historical research included by the author is exceptional. It is apparent to the reader very early on that Steve Dunn has researched the local areas and the subjects explored in this novel beautifully well which makes the whole novel and especially the resurrection of the Vikings even more gripping! What makes a novel great for me is context and the author’s passion jumping off the page and into my reading mind and Dunn has most certainly done this. Dunn’s novel – in my opinion – is a fast paced adrenaline ride from the very first page and never once does this tension let up, he takes the reader on a whimsical journey that is unforgettable and also unpredictable. This novel was so unpredictable because never once did I see where the novel was heading, I was always kept guessing by the multiple twists and turns and it engrossed me even more so thank you so much, Dunn, for this!

To summarise my thoughts on this exceptionally brilliant novel I would say if you are looking to read a novel from a well accomplished, master story teller which focuses heavily on Saxon history as well as Norse mythology then you will adore this! This wonderful novel gets Four Stars from me!
