40-something Hanna, 50-something Mitsy, and 60-something Pandora indulge in a creative assortment of addictions that obscure the mysterious connection to a common past that haunts them all.
Estate reserve pinot noir, QVC, and a deck of maxed-out credit cards drive Hannah and her Virginia horse farm into a financial corner. Religion, spiritualism, and an addiction to the telephone mystic, Pandora, create the agoraphobic cave into which Mitsy retreats from everyone, including her critically ill 15-year-old daughter, Sydney. Pandora trades her green tea and tofu for the cigarettes, coffee, snickers, fine wine, and hashish that muddy her mystical vision just when she needs it most.
The link to their recovery is Sydney, the child among them, and the stake they all share in her perilous condition and unlikely cure. As Syd submits to weekly treatments for an illness she refuses to grace with a name, she plays The Anesthesia Game, a game that ultimately leads her to the origin of her disease and a possible way out of the struggle that binds them all.
The Anesthesia Game is an incredible novel which is a mix of the supernatural and reality. It is a novel with an extremely rare and intriguing plot and because of this it made me fall madly in love with it! Here is a little bit more about this enchanting, mystical novel.
Before I write a little about the synopsis of this book I would love to write about our main characters as they are the driving force of the novel. One of our main characters Hannah is poor and wishing that her and her husband could rekindle their love and how he would stop focusing all the money she spends. We then have Misty, who is Hannah’s nightmarish sister and then we have Misty’s fifteen year old daughter Sydney who is extremely ill with a deadly disease and then we have Pandora who is Misty’s mystic adviser. This may seem confusing already but trust me, once you learn their names and connections the novel is a breeze! What is so perfect about these characters is that they all have their own problems and issues, they are all human. Even celebrities have issues! So it was really nice to see this explored.
Our novel focuses mainly on fifteen year old Sydney and as I mentioned previously she has a deadly disease and to try and fight it she is being administrated with anesthesia and she then, creates a game to survive. Game? I know, it’s confusing but if you read this novel all will be explained! Our three other main character’s are beautifully brought into the plot but they too have issues and use their own forms of anesthesia in the form of religion, drugs and alcohol although Sydney is the key to their survival and this is where our incredible story of tragedy, fear and hope starts.
The Anesthesia Game is a beautiful, heart-breaking story full of courage. It in essence is a novel about a teenager struggling with her illness and how her and her family choose to deal with it and as the novel progresses we follow our main characters and see they all deal with this tragedy in their own way; It is an enticing story and a perfect exploration of the human character. It is a novel that you have to delve into and a novel that needs your full and undivided attention and when you give the novel this it takes you on a magical, unforgettable journey.
This novel is so beautifully written and I praise our author Rea Nolan Martin for doing this. It is hard to be a writer these days but what is even harder is to imagine stories which are original, unique and fascinating without it resembling anything else and Martin has most certainly done this. She ties the story beautifully together and makes sure there are no loose strings. There was times when her words were so dreamy that I completely got lost in this novel and that is magical to me. Martin is an exceptional story teller and from page one I was invested in her story, her writing, her characters and their lives.. Everything so well done Martin for writing such an amazing book!
To conclude my thoughts on The Anesthesia Game if you are looking for a book that will take you on a spellbinding journey full of heart and courage then this definitely is the novel for you! This enchanting novel gets Four Stars from me!
