The Judas Apocalypse, Dan McNeil

On the eve of the Second World war, Dr. Gerhard Denninger, a German archeologist is approached by infamous Grail seeker Otto Rahn who tells him a fantastic story of Templars, Church scandal, a long-buried manuscript, and the key to finding the famous lost treasure of the Cathars. In 1944, with the help of a group of American soldiers, Denninger continues his quest for the secret of the Cathar treasure. With dangers dogging them at every step, will they find what they’re seeking? And will they be prepared for the shocking discovery that awaits them?

The Judas Apocalypse is a fascinating, intriguing story and if you have a passion for stories about lost treasure, the Cathars and mysteries surrounding the Templars as well as adventures linked with the Holy Grail and let’s not forget church scandals! Then you will adore this novel! It is an intriguing novel that examines all of those things perfectly in an enchanting and exciting way. Here is a little bit more about this novel.

Our novel follows our protagonist Dr. Gerhard Denniger who is an profound archaeologist. Early on in the novel he is approached by the infamous and mysterious Grail seeker – Otto Rhan. Rhan approaches Denniger with an incredible, almost unbelievable story about a long buried manuscript and lost treasures of the Cathars which he is desperate to get his hands on and so he needs the help of Denniger for his famed archaeology and insightful mind so that he can help Rhan find this long lost treasure. However this is not all that happens and no way is this plot that simple. The plot of this novel has many different plot avenues and I am thankful of this because otherwise it would have been your average day mystery we have all heard before but The Judas Apocalypse is so much more than that. Our author Dan McNeil has added many intriguing, fascinating elements to this story and so it adds another depth to a already great plot. The Judas Apocalypse is set in the 1940’s during World War One and I have to say I thought this was the perfect setting and decade as it adds such excitement to the story. Our novel is not as simple as it may first appear because Denniger already has other commitments to the heritage bureau and if he helps Otto Rhan it will put him in a difficult and tricky situation with both Hitler and the officials at the heritage bureau as they have both dedicated a lot of time and money to find the Holy Grail and many religious artefacts believing it would help them win the war so of course this will cause a lot of complications for Denniger and create one big dilemma but that is what makes this story so impeccable.
The Judas Apocalypse is a novel that you cannot put down, it is compelling and at the end of every chapter you are compelled by incredible literature to continue to read and those are the best kind of novels in my opinion. Every page is a new adventure in itself and the whole way through I was excited… exciting to see what would happen to Denniger and Rhan, excited to see whether anybody would accomplish their goals of finding the lost manuscript and artefacts… the whole way through I was excited and on edge so I really applaud our author McNeil for compelling me and other reads so brilliantly.

It is apparent to the reader very early on that our author Dan McNeil has invested a lot of time into his novel and has researched the subjects discussed above religiously. What makes McNeil different to Dan Brown is that his research is not made up and exaggerated. Their are some really interesting facts written throughout this novel and it intrigued me so much. Besides, Dan Brown is not the best writer and McNeil trumps his writing a thousand times! As well as the plot and pacing of this novel being magnificent so was the authors characters he created so perfectly. They are believable, realistic and extremely interesting and to be honest I was a little jealous of their knowledge! These characters kept the pace of the novel moving forward briskly and never once did I tire or get bored.

To summarise my thoughts on The Judas Apocalypse if you adore historical novels with religious themes and archaeology and all things adventure then you will adore this novel! This exceptional tale gets Five Stars from me!
